Customizing Your AR

Perhaps none of the rifles available today are as modular as the iconic AR-15. If you have the money and the know-how, you can convert your AR-15 into almost any weapon platform. You've got a versatile platform from home defense to hunting, a fast barrel swap, and a couple of attachments here and there. Building your AR can be a much better option, allowing you to select your parts from the start! But which parts do you select? When customizing your AR-15, are accessories worth your time and money?

A Brief History of Armalite

Since its inception in the 50s, the Armalite (AR) design has evolved. First, the AR-15 rifle was created for the United States military. Then, it was known as the M16. When we look at the differences, you will see that the main difference is the M16 has the select-fire capability, and the AR platform used by civilians is semi-automatic, with one shot per trigger pull.

However, because the AR-15 design patents expired, they can be used by any gun parts or manufacturer. Today, about 20 million designs of the AR platform are available on the market. As a result, an AR-15 isn't necessarily referred to as an AR-15.

Several names are circulating. You might see a rifle with AR or 15 somewhere in the gun's name. There are, however, common terminologies such as AR15, AR platform, AR pattern, Modern Sporting Rifle or MSR, and sometimes, just AR. They all share the same essential components, regardless of their names.

AR Barrels

Your barrel has a significant impact. A longer barrel is required if you intend to go long-range hunting or compete in long-distance shooting. A short barrel is excellent for home defense. Consider this. If your house has narrow corridors and doors, a long barrel may catch and obstruct your movement.

AR Bolt Release

The bolt catch, an internal component of the bolt release, secures the bolt to the rear. It occurs when you press down the nipple beneath the button. Additionally, It releases automatically when met with an empty magazine. You may want to upgrade your bolt release with a larger extended bolt release to save you time if you have to clear a jam or swap magazines.

AR Bolt Carrier Groups (BCG)

Upgrading your BCG is a common upgrade AR owners make to increase performance. Unfortunately, the standard BCG, while functional, is generally made of lower-quality materials.

Consider an aftermarket bolt carrier group if you desire performance, convenience of use, easy cleaning regimens, and precision.
